i felt wafts of breathing, saw gleams in his eyes
he could not decide if to smile or to cry
i stood holding nature for hours through the night
did it know i had failed to get life itself right?

it felt like a century this sentry on guard
an atheist riffraff resigning to god
not as creator or one who commands
but life lived as witness like the sprite in my hands

and years fell so gently like leaves from a tree
we danced in its umbrage, careless and free
yet learning to care for the tasks of the mind:
the brave and the curious, the just and the kind

and almost of age he was turning away
and my heart slowly breaking lost in each day
to another child growing deep in my soul,
the landscape of loneliness taking control
