song about a memory from thirteen

lyrics

charlotte by puppeteer C)2022

Sometimes there are memories
That percolate in life,
They may seem small and empty
But draw blood like a knife.

And one of mine is Charlotte
Seeing my eyes in tears,
When melancholy gave out
To first kiss souvenirs.

We were teenage children,
You'd think naive and dumb,
Not letting school rules kill them
Under a stranger's thumb.

Their yearning for experience,
Its benefits and risks,
Prompted her appearance
Pressing her mouth on my lips.

Do you want to read my comic books with me
After school at the cafe on Bute Street?
Their baguettes are flown in from Gay Paree.
You are famished, I would guess you never eat?

You are the prettiest thing that I've seen
But thinner than a string bean
And you wear the same old over-sized sweater
As red as your eyes are green

And I am green. I'm green.

I'd like to run away with you
But I have no money
We have a cheap house on the Cote d'Azur
Where faces are all sunny

I think of you both night and day
Since your parents fussed,
And teacher took you miles away
To the classroom next to us.

It seems as though when we have break
You still will look my way.
You told me it was a mistake,
That's what your parents say.

You blurted out feeling sad
And kissed me to recall
The flighty feeling that we had,
Not the mighty sting of the fall.

The summer's almost here again
We'll drive to our rundown house in France
Cinemas and beaches will entertain
And I'll bike around the coast's vast expanse

Charlotte, I now pretend that you're with me
Because I want you to know
That I have composed the prettiest ditty
Preparing to let us go.
