If I could see the world through my dying patients’ eyes

By puppeteer

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I could see the world through my dying patients’ eyes,
Each hour a treasure trove of invisible delight:
The miracle of seeing, of being, and the prize
The mundane form an open hand grabs for in the light.
Those figurines of memories frozen in their beds
Rapture in the daily calls of ordinary life,
Where once they railed against its chains, sawed against its threads,
With therapeutic stabbings of their querulous knife.
Death invites our yearning for the dance or for the dirge,
That from our suffering space we may drink of deeper things,
If we could just permit their dying eyes to emerge
In us who live in waste at the spring of our livings.
