a song about how much i loved glam rock as a child 12-15. i collected every glam 7" that came out. i had in fact a small singles box that could keep 75 singles and it almost got completely filled up, at which time punk broke out and that was another box (I also had a box for soul singles and a box for the ex-Beatles solo singles, both of songs from the 1970s). this song also touches on how silly and empty those glam songs could be too, even while exquisitely beautiful (Slade, Sweet, Mott the Hoople, Roxy Music, early 70s Bowie, Gary Glitter, Mud, Shawaddywaddy, Sparks, Suzi Quatro, Wizzard, T.Rex, Alice Cooper, ELO, Alvin Stardust, Iron Virgin, Rubettes, early Queen, David Essex, Cockney Rebel, Arrows, Sailor, Pilot, Paper Lace - I collected them all!). The reference to Bowie was true - I was walking one morning along the King's Road when I saw Bowie on the rooftop of a cafe presumably having breakfast. No idea if this was a regular haunt or just a one-off, but I waved at him and he immediately threw me a peace sign. My face went red as a beetroot and I walked hurriedly along... but never forgot it.
lyrics
Glam Spam by Puppeteer C)2023
Decadence, beauty and fame, you'll go
Innocence, truth and your name will go
The lizards are out on the King's Road
Peacocks in skyscraper shoes, dressed up to code
I can't find peace, I want to explode
Bowie threw me a peace sign from his rooftop cafe
There's Bolan in Biba, is it only money on display?
How does a sound take you far, far away?
From mother's embrace to what child snatchers say?
It's millions of badges on leather, faces painted a dream
(I'm still a kid who keeps his room clean)
How far do I go, what's okay and extreme
Sounds and Melody Maker, the bibles I try to explain
The ink darkens my fingers, the band names light up the lobes of my brain
Sweet ballroom blitz blam
I feel the noize man, I'm slayed, splayed
Do the strand, starman
School's out, and Quatro's my woman
I'll be the twentieth century vicious young dude
This town ain't big enough for you and virgin rebel rule
For my attitude
For my platitude
Youth culture makes me feel good
Are you getting a buzz from being misunderstood?
What's going on?
What is this song?
